Heartburn and Heart Problems

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, often caused by acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While heartburn is usually related to the digestive system, chest discomfort should never be ignored, as it can sometimes mimic or mask heart-related problems such as angina or heart attack.

How to Differentiate Heartburn from Heart Problems

  • Heartburn (Acid Reflux): Burning sensation, often after meals, worsens when lying down, may improve with antacids.

  • Heart-Related Pain (Angina or Heart Attack): Pressure or tightness in the chest, may radiate to the arm, jaw, or back, accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea.

When to Seek Immediate Help

Seek emergency medical care if chest discomfort is:

  • Severe, sudden, or crushing

  • Accompanied by dizziness, sweating, or nausea

  • Radiating to the jaw, arm, or back

  • Persistent and not relieved by antacids

Prevention & Management

For digestive-related heartburn:

  • Avoid spicy, fatty, or acidic foods

  • Eat smaller meals and avoid lying down immediately after eating

  • Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking
