Swelling ?

Swelling, also called edema, is a common symptom of heart problems, especially heart failure. It happens when the heart cannot pump blood efficiently, causing fluid to build up in the tissues — most often in the feet, ankles, legs, or abdomen. This fluid retention is a key sign that the heart is under strain and needs medical attention.

Why Swelling Occurs in Heart Disease

When the heart weakens, blood moves more slowly through the body. This causes pressure to build up in the veins, forcing fluid out into surrounding tissues. The kidneys also retain more salt and water to compensate, which worsens the swelling.

Common Signs of Heart-Related Swelling

  • Swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs

  • Puffiness in the abdomen or sudden weight gain

  • Tightness in shoes or clothing

  • Swollen veins in the neck

  • Shortness of breath or fatigue (in severe cases)

Other Possible Causes of Swelling

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Venous insufficiency (poor leg vein circulation)

  • Certain medications

  • Sitting or standing for long periods

Diagnosis & Treatment

If you notice persistent swelling, your doctor may recommend:

  • ECG or echocardiogram to check heart function

  • Blood tests for kidney and liver function

  • Chest X-ray for fluid buildup

  • Lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake and elevating legs
