Shortness of Breath ?

Shortness of breath (dyspnea) is a common symptom that can indicate problems with the heart or lungs. It may feel like you can’t catch your breath, or you’re breathing faster and harder than usual — even during light activity or rest. While temporary breathlessness can occur from exertion or anxiety, persistent or severe shortness of breath may signal a serious heart or lung condition that needs immediate medical attention.

Common Heart-Related Causes

  • Heart Failure: When the heart cannot pump blood effectively, fluid builds up in the lungs, making it hard to breathe.

  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Blocked arteries reduce oxygen supply to the heart, causing breathlessness, especially during exertion.

  • Arrhythmias: Irregular heart rhythms can reduce blood flow, leading to fatigue and shortness of breath.

  • Heart Valve Disease: Narrowed or leaky valves affect blood circulation, causing breathing difficulty and fatigue.

Other Possible Causes

  • Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Lung infections (like pneumonia)

  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)

  • Anxiety or panic attacks

  • Obesity or poor physical fitness

Diagnosis & Treatment

Your doctor may recommend tests such as:

  • ECG (Electrocardiogram)

  • Chest X-ray or echocardiogram

  • Blood oxygen tests

  • Stress test or lung function tests
